Nadal adjusting clay schedule following Madrid cancelation

Rafael Nadal is turning his attention to the clay events now that he's decided not to play the US Open, but will have to adjust his schedule following the cancelation of Madrid.

The world No. 2 called the decision not to hold the Madrid Masters "sensible and coherent" given the recent increase in cases in the city.

The tournament's cancellation has left Rome as the only big tune-up tournament before the rescheduled French Open, with the ATP now looking at whether to expand the Italian event to one-and-a-half weeks with a larger draw.

But Nadal said he would decide his participation largely based upon virus control and local conditions.

"I don't know whether I will play Rome or not. I will get news of the scheduling changes following the cancellation of Madrid and from there I will have to make decisions," he told press in Spanish. "I am preparing for the clay in Europe. It depends on whether everything is under control or not."

Though he said he understands that others want to play where possible, Nadal would personally prefer to have the rest of the season canceled.

"My heart tells me that would be better, but there are many other interests," he said. "I respect the work and the positive attitude of the ATP and USTA to bring back tennis. I also respect the other players who want to earn the money they need.

"I think currently, all decisions are valid. There is nothing that is sure or correct."

Nine of the Top 100 have not entered the US Open, including some withdrawals with ongoing injuries. Players can still withdraw before the tournament begins, with no penalties.
