Nadal routs Medvedev to win Montreal crown for 35th ATP Masters title

Rafael Nadal breezed to his record 35th ATP Masters 1000 title on Sunday in Montreal with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniil Medvedev. The match lasted just 1 hour and 10 minutes, with Nadal extending his Masters record to two more than world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Medvedev entered his first Masters-level final having won eight of his last nine matches, but his serve let him down. The 23-year-old Russia hit five double faults, including a critical one in the first set at 1-2 to get broken and quickly lose his footing in the match. He’d win just one game after that.

"You’re already in the best spots of the rankings and fighting for all the biggest tournaments," Nadal told Medvedev. "You have all your career in front."

Nadal put on a flawless performance, dropping just one set in Montreal to win his fifth Rogers Cup. The defending champion benefitted from a semifinal withdrawal from Gael Monfils on Saturday.

Medevev can take some solace in cementing his spot inside the Top 10, as he'll move up to a career-high ranking of No. 8. The Russian also impressed the Canadian crowd with half of his speech in flawless French, with Nadal also whipping out a few French sentences.
