BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP)—Argentine tennis star David Nalbandian is expected to be out for up to two months following surgery on his left leg and groin on Thursday.

Nalbandian aggravated a groin strain and tore a muscle in his lower leg while winning a Davis Cup singles against Adrian Ungur of Romania last Friday.

“The operation went very well and David is content,” Nalbandian spokesman Bernardo Ballero told the state-run news agency Telam. “He’s resting and if all goes according to plan he’ll leave the clinic today.”

Nalbandian, a Wimbledon finalist in 2002, has been plagued by injuries. He underwent hip surgery in 2009 and had an abdominal injury last year.

Nalbandian was slowed by the groin strain three weeks ago in a match against Spain’s Tommy Robredo in the Copa Claro clay-court tournament in Buenos Aires.

Ballero hopes Nalbandian will be ready for the French Open, which opens on May 17. That could include playing warmup clay-court events in Madrid and Rome.

He is also expected to be ready for Argentina’s Davis Cup quarterfinal from July 8-10 against Kazakhstan.

Nalbandian has won 11 career singles titles, and been ranked as high as No. 3.
