Martina Navratilova says that she was not uncomfortable having to play a legends doubles match on Margaret Court Arena at the Australian Open. The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion is a lesbian and gay rights activist, while 24-time Slam champ Court has publicly opposed gay marriage
"It's an honor, as always, to be on that court," Navratilova told reporters. "It's a personal issue. It's not about religious rights, it's about human rights. It's a secular view, not a religious view. She's only seeing it from one viewpoint. I think it goes outside of tennis."
Navratilova added that she thinks that the players do not get paid enough at the majors, but in general, they are making plenty.
"Compared to what the Slams are making, yes," she said. "Compared to what a teacher is a making, we are grossly overpaid. [But] I was just doing an interview for the Australian Open for their official film, and I think I won $6,000 when I got to the finals here in '74. So, you know..."
