NCAA champion Paul Jubb gets wild card for Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — NCAA tennis champion Paul Jubb has received a wild card to play at Wimbledon.

The 19-year-old northern Englishman recently won the American college title in Orlando, Florida, playing for the University of South Carolina. He beat Nuno Borges of Mississippi State in straight sets to become the first British winner of the title.

The NCAA champion typically receives a wild card into the U.S. Open later that year, but Jubb will not get one because he is not American.

Jubb wrote on Twitter he was "beyond happy to play my first Wimbledon and be given this amazing opportunity."

Marcos Baghdatis, who reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2006, was one of three other players to get a wild card for the men's singles. Lleyton Hewitt, a 38-year-old Australian who won the Wimbledon singles title in 2002, was given a wild card to play doubles with Jordan Thompson.
