Great Britain’s Heather Watson says that while she has big goals as a player, she wants to takes gradual steps ahead in her career. Last week in Osaka, Waston became first female Briton to win a WTA title in 24 years. She has reached a career-high ranking of No. 50.

“I’m so excited—I can do even better, climb the rankings and maybe get another title or two,” Watson told reporters. “I haven’t set my goals yet. I’ll be doing that over the next few months. It will probably be Top 40 before Top 10. I set reasonable goals. This year I wanted to get inside the Top 50 and I had that goal from start to finish. I’ve just got to keep focused on the right things and not get too far ahead.
“I’ve always believed I can win a WTA title. Earlier in my career I had opportunities to win titles but haven’t believed in myself as much. Now that I have done it, I have the belief I can do it.”
