Outside of the Laver Cup, the last time Frances Tiafoe squared off against a Top 2 opponent was the 2024 Cincinnati Open final, when then world No. 1 Jannik Sinner claimed a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory.

That wait all ends Thursday when Tiafoe gets his shot at the red-hot Italian.

“I’m excited to get out there and see what he’s looking like. I love these types of matches. It’s gonna be a good one,” he told Prakash Amritraj after reaching the quarterfinals Tuesday.

While Sinner has won a record 28 consecutive sets in ATP Masters 1000 competition on his way to another last eight appearance at Hard Rock Stadium, Tiafoe has been pushed to the brink. The No. 19 seed staved off a pair of match points to oust reigning champion Jakub Mensik in a final-set tiebreaker, before recovering late to hold off Terence Atmane in the round of 16.

Tiafoe attributes it to an evolved mindset on the court, one where he can pull the trigger to end an exchange or hang tough in a grueling rally to get the job done.

“I’m relying on suffering. No free lunches. If they’re going to get over the line, let them go and earn it,” he said. “Sometimes you gotta see what happens. Guys are nervous, too.

“Today felt like a bigger win than yesterday, to be honest. With the 4-4, 0-40 down and pulling that out, that’s not a match I win about a year ago.”

"Miami Foe is tough": Frances Tiafoe gets shot at Jannik Sinner | Miami Interview

Tiafoe is through to his first 1000-level quarterfinal since contesting the biggest title match of his career with Sinner. When asked by Amritraj if he utilizes visualization, the 28-year-old shared, “I definitely take a second and think about the positive things that may go on in a match. As of late, I close my eyes and think about shaking the guy’s hand with the win. Positive plays are going to help me win. Kind of put myself in that position before it already happens. I think that’s very real. Manifestation is monumental.”

The world No. 20 has quite the challenge in front of him against Sinner. The four-time major winner has taken four of their five meetings, as he continues his quest to complete a maiden Sunshine Double.

In addition to his set streak at the 1000s, Sinner has clinched 28 consecutive victories against American opponents dating back to the 2023 Shanghai Masters.

“Big Foe, Lulu Foe, all this, but Miami Foe looks good” closed Amritraj.

Laughed Tiafoe, “Miami Foe is tough, bro. No question.”
