In the midst of a trying 2025, Sakkari scored just her third Top 30 win of the season over the world No. 27.

The first day of main-draw play at the Bad Homburg Open on Sunday kicked off with a bang, in more ways than one.

Fireworks came after Maria Sakkari defeated Yulia Putintseva, 7-5, 7-6(6), for just her third Top 30 win in what's been a trying season for the Greek. The match lasted a prolonged two hours and 25 minutes, and after losing the tight contest, the Kazakh was in no mood to linger for any post-match pleasantries. She quickly slapped Sakkari's hand for a handshake, and avoided eye contact, before walking towards her chair.

Sakkari, currently ranked No. 86, appeared to take exception to that, and a heated post-match scene ensued.

Though it was unclear what the Greek said in response to the handshake in the initial moments, Putintseva's answer was obvious: a sarcastic bow in Sakkari's direction. That led to Sakkari crossing over to the Putintseva's side of the court to continue the conversation.

"Just be like a human being," the former world No. 3 was heard saying.

Twice, the Greek attempted to walk away from the conversation, before doubling back in response to a comment from Putintseva. On-court microphones at one stage picked up the Greek saying "nobody likes you."

"When you shake hands with someone, look them in the eyes," Sakkari concluded before walking away for the final time, as Putintseva again bowed in her direction.

But the incident wasn't over after Putintseva left the court. Sakkari addressed the incident in her on-court interview after she was prompted by the emcee.

"I don't think she's going to invite me for dinner for the rest of our lives, but I don't care, to be honest," Sakkari said. "I have very good friends and I'll go to dinner with them. Let me leave it here, and just say that I have respect for her as a player, but that's it."
