Novak Djokovic records historic 100th career win at Roland Garros, reaches quarterfinals

Novak Djokovic keeps writing his name deeper into the history books.

He just became the second man ever to win 100 career matches at Roland Garros following a straight-set victory over Cam Norrie in the fourth round of the clay-court major on Monday.

Since Roland Garros began a century ago in 1925, the only other player to record a century of wins was Rafael Nadal, who amassed 112 of them before retiring from professional tennis last year.

Djokovic is also the third man ever to win 100 career matches at any of the four Grand Slams, alongside Nadal at Roland Garros and Roger Federer at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

No man has won 100 career matches at the US Open yet.

Additionally, three women have hit triple digits at a single major: Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon (120), Chris Evert at the US Open (101) and Serena Williams also at the US Open (108).

In a few weeks, Djokovic could add his name to the above list again—he has 97 career wins at Wimbledon going into this year’s event.

And while 100 will be out of reach at the US Open this year—he’s currently at 90 there—he could add his name to the above list yet again next January at the Australian Open, where he's at 99.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion is the only tennis player ever, male or female, to have 80 or more wins at all four of the Grand Slams, and he actually has 90 or more at all four of them.

Just 10 days after needing a deciding set to defeat Norrie in the semifinals of the lead-up event in Geneva, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1, Djokovic cruised past him in straight sets in Paris, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, the only real trouble coming in the second set as the Brit opened up a 2-0 lead.

But Djokovic held at love and broke right back at love to catch up to 2-all and was never behind again the rest of the match, eventually sealing victory after two hours and 14 minutes on court.

He improves to 19-0 in fourth-round matches at Roland Garros.

Awaiting the No. 6-seeded Djokovic in the quarterfinals will be No. 3-seeded Alexander Zverev. Djokovic leads the overall head-to-head, 8-5, including 3-1 at Grand Slams—though the only loss was his retirement loss at the Australian Open earlier this year.

They've split their only two clay-court meetings, 1-1, with the German winning in the final of Rome in 2017, 6-4, 6-3, and the Serb winning in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 2019, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.

This will be their first meeting on this surface in six years.
