Top-ranked Novak Djokovic will move forward with plans to compete in Dubai next week, marking his first tournament appearance since winning a men’s record-tying 22nd major title at the Australian Open.

Speaking to Serbian media after welcoming members to watch an open practice session, Djokovic confirmed that he applied for an exemption to enter the U.S. following the ATP 500 event with hopes of competing at Indian Wells and Miami. The Belgrade native, who has won a combined 11 of his record 38 Masters 1000 crowns across the Sunshine Double, is awaiting word on a decision.

"It’s not in my hands, I am waiting for an answer," Djokovic said in a translation provided by Saša Ozmo of Sport Klub. "All I know is that the process is ongoing, but I am glad I have the support of the tournament directors. I just hope that the third party, which makes the decision, will think the same."

Djokovic will seek his 94th tour-level title in Dubai.

Under current U.S. requirements, most foreign air travelers are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. That mandate is expected to expire on May 11 when the White House is set to end the nation’s coronavirus public health emergency.

Last month, the 35-year-old returned to Australia a year after his vaccination status led to then Immigration Minister Alex Hawke using his special power to revoke Djokovic’s visa. It was some reunion, as Djokovic went 12-0 Down Under, culminating with his 10th Australian Open trophy thanks to a final-round victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas.

During his latest Grand Slam title run, the No. 4 seed navigated his way through a left hamstring issue that was later revealed to involve a 3 centimeter tear, according to tournament director Craig Tiley. When asked about its progress, Djokovic said the injury was "good."
