Novak Djokovic reaches 60th Grand Slam quarterfinal, the first man ever to do so

Novak Djokovic has defeated Holger Rune, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, to reach the milestone 15th Wimbledon quarterfinal of his career.

And it’s actually a double milestone—he’s now through to the 60th overall Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career, the first man to reach that many in the history of the sport.

At Roland Garros this year, the Serb reached the 59th Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career, surpassing Roger Federer’s previous record of 58, and he now one-ups his own record.

Djokovic also holds the men's all-time records for most Grand Slam semifinals (48), finals (36) and, of course, titles (24).

Djokovic set the tone early against Rune, breaking the Dane in his opening service game for a 2-0 lead and holding from there until he had the first set in his pocket. And then, after six consecutive holds to start the second set, he broke him again and eventually built a two-sets-to-none lead.

From there the floodgates opened, as he broke the No. 15 seed twice more to breeze through the third set and into the quarterfinals, wrapping it up after just over two hours on court.

Awaiting the No. 2-seeded Djokovic in the last eight will be No. 9-seeded Alex de Minaur, who dispatched French up-and-comer Arthur Fils earlier in the day, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Djokovic leads the pair’s head-to-head series, 2-1. They’ve split their two meetings this year, with De Minaur winning at United Cup, 6-4, 6-4, and Djokovic winning in Monte Carlo, 7-5, 6-4. Djokovic also won their only other meeting—their only Grand Slam meeting, too—at last year's Australian Open, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.
