Querrey on Brits' love for Murray: 'Like nothing we have in States'

LONDON—Sam Querrey, who has reached his second straight quarterfinal at Wimbledon, will play world No. 1 Andy Murray on Wednesday.

The American lives in California, and is very impressed by the attention Murray gets in Britain.

“It’s like nothing that we have in the [United] States," he said. "I'm sure a couple of the football players are massive names, too, but [Murray] is arguably the biggest athlete over here. In the U.S. we have 10 athletes, you would argue, on the same level. The entire country seems like they watch Wimbledon. In the U.S., whether it's football, baseball, basketball, tennis, a lot of people watch, but it's not 100 percent of America [that] watches even the Super Bowl.

"It feels like everyone watches Wimbledon here with Andy Murray.”

Last year, Murray became No. 1 by winning nine titles, including Wimbledon, the Summer Olympics, three Masters 1000 events and the ATP Finals. But this season, Murray has only won one title, in Dubai in February.

Querrey says that Murray deserves to be No. 1, especially given the public demand he has at home.

“He's earned that position. I'm sure [Murray] feels some of the pressure sometimes," said Querrey. "He's done an incredible job by backing it up and living up to, and winning, Wimbledon, winning the Olympics, being No. 1 in the world. He's really accomplished all that a player can accomplish. Everything now is just like icing on the cake.”

Murray is 7-1 versus Querrey, including a straight-set win at Wimbledon back in 2010.
