Race to the ATP Finals: Battle for last four spots in Turin could reach boiling point in Paris

There are only two weeks left to go in the Race to the ATP Finals, and the battle for the last remaining spots could reach a boiling point this week with a lot of points on offer at the Masters 1000 event in Paris.

Last week, Alexander Zverev became the fourth player to qualify for the elite event, joining Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic.

There are just four spots left—so let's check in on the state of the race.

How have the Race to the ATP Finals standings changed this week?

While there were no shifts at all in the Top 13 of the race standings following last week's ATP 500 events in Basel and Vienna, that doesn't mean nothing has changed in the race, points-wise.

First of all, the four players in the best position for the last four spots in Turin—Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti, currently No. 5 to No. 8—are now separated by just 160 points, with Fritz at 3,835 and Musetti at 3,675. Last week, that spread was 350 points.

Second of all, the gap between that quartet and the rest of the field has grown this week, with Musetti now 480 points ahead of No. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime. Last week, that gap was 340 points.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the only player who makes any move among the Top 15 this week, rising from No. 17 to No. 14 after reaching the final in Basel, where he fell to Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca.

(Note: Draper and Rune, currently No. 10 and No. 12 in the race, have ended their seasons due to arm and Achilles injuries, respectively.)

What can happen in Paris?

All of the leading contenders for spots in Turin are in action in Paris this week, and with so many points up for grabs, anything can happen—Auger-Aliassime could even rise from No. 9 to No. 5, depending on how he and the four leading contenders ahead of him perform.

The champion will earn 1,000 points, the runner-up earns 650 points, semifinalists 400 points and quarterfinalists 200 points, and so on.

However, with three of the four players who have already qualified for Turin—Alcaraz, Sinner and Zverev—also in the draw, it's not going to be easy to earn the biggest of those points hauls this week.

It's also worth noting that there's one more week of tournaments after Paris that counts towards Turin, though they're smaller tournaments—a pair of ATP 250 stops in Athens, Greece and Metz, France.
