Race to the ATP Finals: Djokovic, Rune, Medvedev rise after deep runs in Shanghai

Unlike the Race to the WTA Finals, which could wrap up in Ningbo this week, the Race to the ATP Finals is very much up in the air—only Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have qualified so far, with six spots still up for grabs in the elite field.

There's some movement though after Shanghai though, and several contenders for those last six spots are playing at ATP 250 events this week in Almaty, Brussels and Stockholm.

How have the Race to the ATP Finals standings changed after Shanghai?

Usually there would be more movement in the Race after a Masters 1000 event, but with so many top players going out early in Shanghai—which cleared the way for a historic all-unseeded final—the Top 15 mostly stayed the same.

Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev switch spots at No. 3 and No. 4 for the second straight Race update, after the German lost in the third round in Shanghai and the Serb went on to reach the milestone 80th Masters 1000 semifinal of his career.

After that, you have to go all the way down to Holger Rune to see any movement at all—the Dane rises from No. 14 to No. 12 after reaching the 11th Masters 1000 quarterfinal of his career.

Perhaps the biggest news is Daniil Medvedev entering the Top 15, jumping from No. 20 to No. 15 after another strong showing in China. Since his disappointing first-round exit at the US Open, the former No. 1 has now reached the quarterfinals in Hangzhou, the semifinals in Beijing and now another semifinal in Shanghai.

Note: Jack Draper, who's currently at No. 9 on the race standings, ended his season after the US Open due to an arm injury, so Auger-Aliassime is effectively first out from the Top 8.

What can happen this week?

Plenty of ATP Finals contenders are in action at 250 tournaments, and every point can make a difference when it comes to qualification. Medvedev is playing in Almaty; Musetti and Auger-Aliassime are in Brussels; and Rune and Ruud are in Stockholm.

The race will really heat up next week with two ATP 500 events in Basel and Vienna, followed by the last Masters 1000 event of the season—and likely the conclusion of the race—in Paris.
