Novak Djokovic stops Rafael Nadal’s 37-match winning streak on clay by beating the Spaniard 7-5, 6-4 to win the title in Madrid. The Serb is 32-0 this year, including big titles at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami and now Madrid. He has beaten No. 1 Nadal in three of those finals. Djokovic is just 10 match wins away from equaling John McEnroe's Open Era record of a 42-0 start in 1984.
It appears that if Djokovic wins the title in Rome next week and defending champion Nadal fails to reach the semifinals, Djokovic will become No. 1 for the first time.—Matthew Cronin
