Aravane Rezai has defeated top seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the first round of Eastbourne.

"I don't think it's unexpected," said Rezai. "I have the game to play well and beat big players, I have a big game, and I can play on grass.

Reazai took the only break in the third set, regrouping after a lopsided second set. "I called my coach on the court and I tried to calm down and breathe, and serve better, and he gave me a tactic plan and after that I played better," she said.

Wozniacki regretted missing her opportunities in a tight first set. " I had eight break points in the first set, she had one, and she got it," said Wozniacki. "The same was true in the third set. I didn't take advantage of the break points.

"She played well, she tried to take the ball early and hit every shot.

"Definitely I would like to have got some more matches here but I just need to keep my head up and play some practise matches and prepare for Wimbledon that way."
