France’s Aravane Rezai has stopped fourth-ranked Jelena Jankovic 7-5 6-4 in the quarters of Madrid, which means that the Serbian cannot pass Caroline Wozniacki for the No. 3 spot at Roland Garros.
"To be honest, I've never played a player who hits every ball like that," Jankovic said. "Some players hit the ball really hard, but no one hits every single ball like that. Doesn't matter if it's a high ball or a low ball. It was tough to read."
The two had a cold handshake at net, with Rezai having accused Jankovic of being unsportsmanlike earlier in the year.
The Frenchwoman will face another unseeded player in the semifinals after Lucie Safarova upset 16th-seed Nadia Petrova 6-1,1-6, 6-4.—M.C.
