METZ, France (AP)—Tommy Robredo beat Daniel Brands 6-1, 7-6 (3) to reach the second round at the Open de Moselle on Monday.
Robredo, who won this indoor tournament in 2007, had seven aces and broke Brands’ serve twice in the second set.
In other first-round matches, Michael Berrer beat Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (5), 6-2, and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan topped Florent Serra 6-4, 6-4.
Berrer saved all four break points he faced in the first set and defeated Schuettler for the first time in three matches.
He broke Schuettler’s serve in the second game of the second set to take control, and sealed the win by breaking again in the eighth game.
Istomin broke Serra’s serve to take a 4-1 lead in the second set, but Istomin lost his next two service games as Serra got even.
Serra then lost his serve for the fourth time in the match and Istomin held his at love to complete the win.
