Andy Roddick has withdrawn from Madrid with a stomach virus.

"This morning I thought I could play but then I found myself worse when warming up and I can't focus on the tennis ball," said Roddick.

Madrid was to be Roddick's first tournament on clay this season, meaning that he is now looking at going into the French Open without any warmup events. Roddick said he is not keen to take a wildcard into an event next week, just days before the start of the French.

Roddick was entered in the doubles at Madrid, but he and Jurgen Melzer lost their first-round doubles match on Monday.
