Roger Federer: "At the moment, everything is still a little bit uncertain"

Roger Federer plans to decide his schedule for the rest of the season in the next few days, including whether he will play the US Open.

Federer has not played since his fourth-round defeat at Wimbledon, saying he had another setback with his knee following his return to competition from two knee surgeries in 2020.

Having been on vacation in Croatia, he is now back in Switzerland, attending a soccer match in Basel yesterday.

Speaking to Blick, Federer said, ''I was on vacation. I haven't done anything for a while because of the knee... This week I'll meet with doctors and my team and decide what to do going forward. At the moment, everything is still a little bit uncertain."

Federer has played just five events this season, coming back in Doha before taking another break and then playing on clay and grass. He was unsure about about the length of his layoff, noting that recovering from injuries takes longer at his age.

"You need more time for everything," he said. "Before if you had a blocked back, it took two days and everything was fine again. Now, it could require two weeks. You have to have more patience with with the pain, with yourself, with returning to court again."

But Federer added that he has also enjoyed the accomplishment of competing again, knowing "what goes into it" under these circumstances.

He's also enjoyed the time off.

"It was great to be with my family, with the kids, with Mirka and my parents," he said. "We celebrated with friends during my birthday."

Back in Spain, Nadal to have more evaluation on foot before deciding whether to play US Open, according to Marca.

Nadal will not play next week in Cincinnati because of ongoing foot problems, having already announced his withdrawal this week from Toronto.

The Spanish newspaper said that the the 35-year-old will consult his Spanish tennis federation doctor Dr. Angel Ruiz-Cotorro and have further evaluations before he decides whether to play at Flushing Meadows.

Nadal returned to competition a week ago at Washington, D.C, having not played since the French Open, and won his opener but fell to Lloyd Harris in his second contest. This week, he described his physical issues as not a new injury but a chronic condition, saying that he was off the court for 20 days following his semifinal defeat to Novak Djokovic at the French Open.

"Honestly, I didn't have an injury," he told press prior to Toronto. "I just had the foot problems, the problem that I had since 2005—there are some moments where is worse and some moments where it is better. Paris, my foot was not recovering.

"I have been a lot of pain for a couple of weeks, so I could not practice. And mentally, of course, it takes time—it had been a chance for me, and I didn't play enough good."
