After a photo shoot seemingly directed by Wes Anderson, none other than Roger Federer lands on the cover of Town & Country's October issue, and he has words. Interesting ones, at that, given how much has been written about the man to date. Here are a couple choice quotes:
On the subject of his 2008 Wimbledon final loss to Rafael Nadal, an all-time classic match: Fans “relate to you sometimes more when you lose. And then I think I got unbelievable support from 2008 onward. They wanted to see me win again.”
About winning his first Grand Slam title after the age (20) when the likes of Marat Safin, Lleyton Hewitt, and Andy Roddick claimed theirs: “I wasn’t Tiger Woods, or Rafa, or [Martina] Hingis—one of those genius superkids who you knew one day would be a champion."
Federer also speaks to life on the road with wife Mirka and their four children, those two sets of twins whose hands everyone's already wanting to glue racquets, and how he wants to branch out as food and drink go when he retires from tennis. (Fancy this: He wishes to be a wine connoisseur.) Yes, two of the not-so-shocking pieces of the T&C cover feature: He still has exquisite taste and style.
The new issue of Town & Country will be on newsstands September 16.
