Roland Garros Day 10 preview & pick: Iga Swiatek vs. Martina Trevisan

Steve Tignor said it best about the upcoming quarterfinal match between Iga Swiatek and Martina Tevisan. “Where Swiatek is the prodigy, Trevisan is the Cinderella, the journeywoman whose foot has fit the slipper, or the sneaker, for a week.”

Players don’t appreciate the term journeyman (or woman), but Trevisan certainly fits the bill. Prior to her run in Paris, she sat at No. 159 in the WTA rankings with no Grand Slam victories to speak of. She’s played on the pro tour since 2008, but has won just $413,416 in career prize money.

Players despise the term because everyone on tour is very good and very capable, and as we’ve seen this week with the Italian, it doesn’t take much to start believing in a big way. Win or lose, Trevisan will walk away with over $300,000 in prize money. All it takes is one good week.

While Trevisan has scored four consecutive upsets— she's beaten Camila Giorgi, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, and Kiki Bertens— don’t expect another one on Tuesday. Swiatek is now the oddsmakers favorite to take home the title, and enters this match as a gigantic (-545) favorite.

Nobody has played better than the 19-year-old Pole, who has yet to lose more than five total games in a match this week. She throttled Simona Halep, 6-1, 6-2, and is combining raw power, consistency, and jaw-dropping shotmaking.

“She played unbelievable today and she was everywhere and she hit all the balls in very strong, very powerful,” Halep told press. “She played really well and her match was like, no, it was her match today.”

Not only is Swiatek outplaying her opponents, she's making them look silly with her combination of power, finesse, and downright swagger.

Both Trevisan and Swiatek have hugged the baseline all week. The battle for court position will be crucial. Here, Trevisan simply refuses to retreat behind the baseline against one of the game's heaviest hitters in Kiki Bertens.

Trevisan is proof that anything can happen, especially in tennis, but unless Swiatek crashes back down to earth, it should be a quick day at the office for the supremely talented Pole.
