Rome, Madrid to adjust plans following warnings from local authorities

Rome was told to shut its doors to fans while Madrid was warned of "inadvisable" conditions.

The Rome and Madrid Masters are both adjusting their plans following tightened instructions from local authorities.

The clay court events have been rescheduled for from their usual dates due to the coronavirus pandemic, but a recent resurgence in Europe is now affecting even their more limited arrangements.

The Italian tennis federation has been told by Rome's scientific advisory committee not to allow fans because of the safety concerns involved, according to Italian press. The tournament had previously announced plans to have around 17,000 spectators for the one-week ATP and WTA competition. But the federation still has permission to hold the events at the Foro Italico.

The Madrid Masters could be cancelled altogether, according to El Confidencial. The local Madrid council has sent a communication to the organizers saying that it is "inadvisable" for the tournament to be played given the "health risks involved for the public, organization, and players."

The local government has not so far prohibited the event, but could do so if conditions require. Spain has been experiencing a sharp increase in recent weeks.

A statement from organizers said they were "working with the ATP, WTA and local health authorities on ways the tournament could safely be played" and would announce their decision "as soon as possible."

Madrid is scheduled to be played the week following the US Open, with Rome and the French Open next on the schedule. No changes have so far been announced by the French Open.
