Casper Ruud has now reached all four 'big' clay finals with Rome run, secures Top 16 seed at Roland Garros

When this tournament began, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka were the subject of our speculations. Would we see the WTA’s No. 1 and 2 reprise the excellent final they played in Madrid? If so, what would it tell us about Roland Garros? It didn’t take long for reality to intercede, and remind us that 1 vs. 2 matchups are exceedingly rare. Sabalenka lost early to Sofia Kenin, and Swiatek had to retire from her quarterfinal with Rybakina.

Instead of 1 and 2, we’ll see No. 6 take on No. 47 on Saturday evening. Rybakina’s run shouldn’t come as a surprise. The 2022 Wimbledon champion is 26-7 this season, and has made three big finals, in Melbourne, Indian Wells, and Miami. She may not have a game that’s custom-built for clay, but neither did, say, two-time Roland Garros champion Maria Sharapova. Rybakina was fortunate that Swiatek couldn’t continue at 2-2 in the third set of their match, but she had staged a strong comeback to push it that far. Rybakina did the same thing against Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinals, winning five straight games from 1-4 down in the second set. She’s competing confidently at the moment.

On the line Saturday: a Top 4 Roland Garros seed for Rybakina and Top 20 debut for Kalinina.

So, obviously, is Kalinina, who is having a career-best run in Rome, and one that was hardly foreseeable. The 26-year-old Ukrainian came to the Foro after three straight first-round losses, but she has beaten three straight seeds—Madison Keys, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Veronika Kudermetova—in three long, three-set slogs. Kalinina lost the first set in two of them, and has looked destined for the exit ramp many times. But each time she has dug deeper, refused to give an inch mentally, and hung in just a little longer than her opponents. Along the way, she has made a lot of new fans in Rome.

Rybakina and Kalinina have played once, on green clay in Charleston last spring, and Kalinina won 6-4 in the third set. Their styles will present a contrast: Rybakina is a flat hitter with a linear, first-strike game; Kalinina is a do-whatever-it-takes grinder with heavy ground strokes who can change trajectories with them. Kalinina has had the more amazing run, but Rybakina’s serve may be one obstacle she can’t outlast. Winner: Rybakina
