Safina suffers second straight first-round defeat

Dinara Safina has exited 7-6 (1), 7-6( 3) against Karla Zakopolova in the first round of Madrid.

Safina, the defending champion at Rome and Madrid, has now suffered first round exits at both events and is expected to drop towards the bottom of the Top 10 when the rankings are released next week. Safina is 1-3 since returning last month from a back injury that had sidelined her since the Australian Open.
