NEW YORK (AP) Seventh-seeded Francesca Schiavone won her second three-set match at the U.S. Open, needing nearly three hours to beat Chanelle Scheepers in the third round Saturday.
The Italian won 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in 2 hours, 57 minutes against the 81st-ranked Scheepers. Schiavone also went to three sets in the first round, then dropped only two games in the second.
The 2010 French Open champion has yet to face an opponent ranked in the top 80 at the tournament.
The two players combined for 95 unforced errors and 15 breaks of serve.
Scheepers, from South Africa, fell to 0-8 against top-10 opponents.
