BRUSSELS (AP) French Open champion Francesca Schiavone reached the second round of the Brussels Open, one of five seeded players to advance Tuesday in the clay-court tuneup for the French Open.
Schiavone, seeded third, beat Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-2, 7-5. Also winning first-round matches were No. 4 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, No. 6 Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, No. 7 Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania and No. 8 Peng Shuai of China.
Jankovic defeated Anastasia Rodionova of Australia 6-2, 6-3, and Wickmayer downed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. Dulgheru rallied past Polona Hercog of Slovenia 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, Peng topped Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.
Belgian qualifier Alison Van Uytvanck eliminated Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, advancing to the second round with two Americans. Lucky loser Irina Falconi defeated Zuzana Ondraskova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3, and Abigail Spears beat Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa 6-3, 6-1. Japan's Ayumi Morita beat Zheng Jie of China 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki plays Wednesday.
