MUNICH(AP) Fifth-seeded Rainer Schuettler of Germany lost in the first round of the BMW Open on Tuesday, beaten by qualifier Thiemo de Bakker 6-3, 6-3 in the Dutchman's first win in a main draw-match this year.
Marin Cilic of Croatia eased into the second round of this clay-court tuneup for the French Open, defeating German qualifier Dieter Kindelmann 6-3, 6-2.
Cilic, seeded second, is the highest-ranked player in the tournament following the late withdrawal of defending champion Fernando Gonzalez, who was seeded first. Gonzalez has an ankle injury.
Also in the first round, seventh-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu of France defeated Lamine Ouahab of Algeria 6-3, 6-2.
