After expectedly pulling out of the 2011 French Open, Serena Williams releases an official statement saying she hopes to be back competing this summer. Williams hasn't played since winning 2010 Wimbledon due to two foot operations and blood clots in her lungs.

"While I am making good progress, unfortunately I won't be able to compete in Roland Garros as I am continuing to rehab my foot and recover from the pulmonary embolism," she said. "I am grateful for every moment I have and the fact that I have returned to the court. I am hopeful that I will be back competing this summer."

A source in Williams camp told TENNIS.com that Serena is aiming to return at Wimbledon, but is unsure whether she will be able to make it back in time.

Williams' sister Venus is also considered very unlikely to play the French Open, which begins on May 20.
