Serena Williams, who won her first match at the Australian Open after not playing since early September, said she has plenty of experience and it really doesn’t matter that she wasn’t on court for a while.

The 34-year-old Williams has won 21 Grand Slams.

“I think, ‘OK, I haven't played in a long time, but I have been playing for 30 years,’” the world No. 1 said. “So I try to focus on that. Sometimes it's hard, because definitely tennis is a sport where you need those matches. But I just try to just focus on whatever I can, the positives.”

Williams has won the Australian Open six times, most recently beating Maria Sharapova in the final in 2015.

The American also won the French Open and Wimbledon last year. She lost in the semifinals of the U.S. Open to Roberta Vinci. She called it a season after that defeat.

“I just needed a break,” she said. “I have been going nonstop since the Olympics [in] London [in 2012], and seeing that this is another Olympic year, I wanted to start the year out really fresh and really go at it again as hard as I can. I just needed that time to just recover the best of my ability and get really fit, and really train and get ready for the season.”

Williams will play in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
