MASON, Ohio (AP) Serena Williams withdrew from the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday because of a sore toe on her right foot, another setback in her comeback from a nearly year-long streak of injuries and surgeries.

Williams had won her last two tournaments. After playing on Tuesday night, her right foot was a little swollen. She cut the foot on glass at a restaurant and had two operations last year. After withdrawing on Wednesday, she said it's better to be cautious and get ready for the rest of the season.

The Cincinnati-area tournament also lost top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki, who dropped her opening match for the second consecutive week. She fell to American Christina McHale 6-4, 7-5 in the second round.
