WATCH: Marin Cilic led Croatia to a 2-0 victory over Spain at the Davis Cup Finals last month.

Sergi Bruguera has stepped down as Spain's Davis Cup captain, the Real Federación Española de Tenis (RFET) announced.

The move follows Spain's opening-round quarterfinal defeat to Croatia in the Davis Cup Finals. The 2020 Davis Cup champions did not have either No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz or No. 2 Rafael Nadal on their team for the Finals.

But Spanish press indicated it was influenced more by Bruguera's coaching position with Germany's Alexander Zverev, who has been sidelined with injury but is now back on court and training for a comeback to tour.

The RFET's next choice for captain includes David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez, with a decision scheduled for the start of next season.

It's also been speculated that Mardy Fish is no longer the Davis Cup captain for the United States, having been appointed in 2019. The team's quarterfinal exit was accompanied by controversy around player selection, which saw Rajeev Ram left off the roster in favor of keeping the fifth spot unfilled.

No change has officially been announced.
