WATCH: Halep addressed the media after an opening-round Western & Southern Open win, her first since incurring a calf tear in Rome.

Simona Halep announced on social media Wednesday morning that she had parted ways with coach Darren Cahill after six years together.

The news comes a week after the former world No. 1 tied the knot with longtime partner Toni Iuruc.

“Thank you D for everything, for making me a better tennis player and a better person,” she wrote.

Halep and Cahill first paired up in the summer of 2015 following early exits at Roland Garros and Wimbledon; two years later she finished atop the WTA rankings and had reached a second major final in Paris.

Her long-awaited first major came on the terre battue in 2018, and though they briefly split for the following season, they remained in correspondence through Halep’s Wimbledon run, where she dismantled 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.

“Of course, Darren is part of this,” she said after winning the title. “I talk with him all the time. He came to see my match again today. His heart is with us. Made me a little bit stronger today, honestly, to be able to believe that I have the chance to win.”

The two formally reunited at the end of 2019, but were largely apart due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the persistent calf injury that kept the Romanian from defending her Wimbledon title this summer.

Halep is yet to announce a new coach.
