WATCH: Before pulling out of the Olympics, defending Wimbledon champion Simona Halep withdrew from the grass-court major.

Simona Halep and Stan Wawrinka have joined the increasing exodus from the Olympics, both announcing they will not play due to injuries.

Halep experienced a leg injury at Rome and also did not play either Roland Garros and Wimbledon. She said her recovery "requires more time and I have made the decision to withdraw from the Olympic Games."

The 27-year-old would have been the Romanian flag-bearer if she had competed.
