Simona Halep and Stan Wawrinka have joined the increasing exodus from the Olympics, both announcing they will not play due to injuries.

Halep experienced a leg injury at Rome and also did not play either Roland Garros and Wimbledon. She said her recovery "requires more time and I have made the decision to withdraw from the Olympic Games."

The 27-year-old would have been the Romanian flag-bearer if she had competed.

Wawrinka recently underwent foot surgery for a second time this season. The three-time Grand Slam champion has not played since Doha.

Others not playing include Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Dominic Thiem, Denis Shapovalov and Cameron Norrie. The event will be played on hard courts.
