Stan Wawrinka: grass is "the most challenging surface for me"

For Stan Wawrinka, making the immediate transition from clay to grass hasn’t always come naturally.

The three-time major champion holds a modest 29-29 record in tour-level grass events and has reached just one final, in s-Hertogenbosch in 2013. Fresh off a quarterfinal run at Roland Garros, Wawrinka is centering his focus on adjusting his footwork in order to improve his chances on grass, which he declares "the most challenging surface for me."

"For me, it’s about adapting the way I am moving," Wawrinka told Prakash Amritraj In London. "You need to be lower. You’re always moving around the body, making small steps. I normally like to have some big steps to really use my fitness. On grass, it’s a bit more challenging. That’s what I’ve been doing the last few days to try [and get] ready for the first match."

The Swiss will open play Tuesday at The Queen’s Club on Centre Court against British wild card Dan Evans. Wawrinka’s best result at the ATP 500 event in London came five years ago, when he advanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual winner Grigor Dimitrov.
