Carlos Alcaraz made a winning return to the site of his first ATP title on Thursday, cruising past Norbert Gombos, 6-2, 6-3, in his opening match in Umag, Croatia.

The 19-year-old Spaniard’s win over the Slovakian was his 40th win of the year, making him just the second man to record 40 or more tour-level wins in 2022.

It was also Alcaraz’s 25th clay-court win of the year, tying Ruud for the lead—Alcaraz is now 25-3 on the surface this year, while Ruud is 25-7.

Alcaraz, who’s now 6-0 in his career in Umag—he went 5-0 en route to the title last year—will play Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis in the quarterfinals on Friday.
