Stat of the Day: Grigor Dimitrov records milestone 400th win of career in Chengdu

Grigor Dimitrov made a winning start to his post-US Open season on Saturday, defeating Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas, 6-3, 6-4, in his opening match in Chengdu, China.

And it was a very notable win for the former world No. 3—it was the milestone 400th tour-level win of his career.

He was informed of the stat in his on-court interview.

“Yeah, absolutely I’m happy, almost tears in my eyes. Honestly I didn’t know that,” he said. “I’m just humbled, really. Over the course of so many years on tour, every milestone you have it’s very special. And I mean, 400th win, this is magnificent.

"I’m very happy.”

The Bulgarian, who was born in 1991, is also the first man born in 1990 or later to record 400 career tour-level wins.

Kei Nishikori, who has 433 career wins, was just a few days from being on the list—he was born on December 29th, 1989.

The Bulgarian’s milestone victory puts him through to the quarterfinals in Chengdu, an ATP 250 hard-court event.

Awaiting him in the last eight will be an all-one-handed-backhand clash against Australia’s Christopher O’Connell, who defeated Japan’s Taro Daniel on Friday, 7-6 (10), 6-4.

Dimitrov has won both previous meetings against O’Connell, in the first round of the Australian Open in 2017, 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-3, and in the quarterfinals of Geneva this year, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4.
