Destiny in the Desert: Our interview with Taylor Fritz, hometown champion at Indian Wells

It was a breakthrough two weeks for Taylor Fritz at Indian Wells this year—not only did he win by far the biggest title of his career at the Masters 1000 event, he was also the first American man to win the prestigious tournament in 21 years, since Andre Agassi won it in 2001—when Fritz was only three years old.

But the now-24-year-old California native also continued a remarkable trend in the desert—with his wins over Andrey Rublev in the semifinals and Rafael Nadal in the final, he improved to 5-0 in his career against Top 10 players at Indian Wells.

FRITZ VS TOP 10 PLAYERS AT INDIAN WELLS: 5-0
d. No. 7 Cilic in 2nd Rd in 2017, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 [first career Top 10 win]
d. No. 7 Berrettini in 3rd Rd in 2021, 6-4, 6-3
d. No. 4 Zverev in QFs in 2021, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3)
d. No. 7 Rublev in SFs in 2022, 7-5, 6-4
d. No. 4 Nadal in F in 2022, 6-3, 7-6 (5)

The wins over No. 4s Zverev and Nadal are the biggest wins of his career by ranking.

Fritz is actually 6-0 against Top 20 players at Indian Wells, too: in his only match against a player in the No. 11-20 range here, he defeated a No. 14-ranked Jannik Sinner in the fourth round last year, 6-4, 6-3.
