World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas made a winning start to his week in Lyon on Thursday, beating No. 53-ranked American Tommy Paul, 6-1, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 event.

Tsitsipas is now 30-8 on the year, the first man or woman to reach 30 tour-level wins in 2021. Andrey Rublev is right behind him with 29 wins, and Ashleigh Barty leads the women’s tour with 27.

“I had a great time today on the court with the [crowd],” Tsitsipas told ATPTour.com. “I felt a lot of love and support in the difficult moments, so I want to give them the best from my tennis.”

Tsitsipas has now reached the quarterfinals or better at nine of the 10 individual ATP events he’s played this year, his only pre-quarterfinal loss coming to Casper Ruud in the round of 16 in Madrid.

Awaiting him in the Lyon quarterfinals will be No. 60-ranked Yoshihito Nishioka, who followed up his first-round win over No. 33 Ugo Humbert with a second-round upset over No. 14 Gael Monfils.

Tsitsipas will be playing against the Japanese left-hander for the first time.
