Sloane Stephens tells the Boston Globe it was unfair that her upset of Serena Williams at the Australian Open was seen bysome as not being legitimate because Serena was dealing with an ankle injury.
“There’s always going to be something,” Stephens said. “If I would have been injured and lost, love and love, everyone would have been, ‘Oh, Serena killed her.’ Not ‘Oh, she was injured.’”
She also said she didn’t appreciate Williams later tweeting a picture of her swollen ankle.
“Obviously, that was a little much,” says Stephens. “But I got the W. She got the L.”
The Boston Globe interview was conducted at Indian Wells, before this week’s tournament in Madrid, when Serena and Stephens made up.
