Samantha Stosur and other Australian players have backed Casey Dellacqua in her criticism of Margaret Court for her stance against same-sex marriage.
"Look, I think everyone can have their own opinion. I don’t agree with Margaret’s opinion," Stosur was quoted as saying by AAP.
Court recently had a letter published by an Australian newspaper saying that she would avoid using Australian airline Qantas because she objected to its CEO's comments in favor of marriage equality. Dellacqua slammed Court and tweeted another chastising newspaper letter from the 24-time Grand Slam singles champion when she and her partner announced they had had a child. Dellacqua and her partner now have two children.
Stosur suggested that some players could refuse to play on Margaret Court Arena at the Australian Open, in opposition to Court's comments.
"The court’s named Margaret Court Arena because of what she did in tennis, and that’s why basically," said Stosur. "I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we all get down to the Australian Open, who wants to play on Margaret Court Arena and who doesn’t, and we’ll go from there."
Australian players John Millman and Jaimee Fourlis also backed Dellacqua.
"Two women can parent as good as a man and a woman," said Fourlis, who competed as a wild card at Roland Garros.
The comments have spurred a lot of discussion in Australia, drawing in even the Prime Minister, who said Court was entitled to her opinions and the recognition she has received was for her achievements as a tennis player.
