Garbine Muguruza, who fell to Timea Bacsinszky in the first round in Madrid, says she can still find her game before she has to defend her title at the French Open.

Though the Spaniard stunned Serena Williams in the final to win her first major, she has yet to win another tournament since then.

The world No. 4 said that she has never played at a high level in Madrid.

"Maybe I was more nervous about playing at home," Muguruza said. "Honestly, I had no expectations in Madrid because I never played well here. Maybe the conditions. I train hard, but when I compete my game is not there … I will try to play better at Rome.”

This season, Muguruza has retired in three events: Brisbane, Doha and Miami. In addition to reaching the semifinals in Brisbane, she also got to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and in Indian Wells. But with opening-round defeats in Stuttgart and Madrid, she is still looking for her first win on clay as she gears up for her title defense at the French Open.

"I'm not concerned about whether I have played more or less matches on clay, because it's a surface where I have played a lot," she said.

The 23-year-old said she is concentrating on improving her game, not on playing the French Open.

“I'm not looking forward to Roland Garros right now,” Muguruza said. “I won it, but there's Rome, Birmingham, Wimbledon ... there are a lot of tournaments ahead."
