Hair, hair! Joao Fonseca delivers on Basel promise with buzz cut, Mark Lajal chops trademark dreads

After capturing a maiden ATP 500 title at October’s Swiss Indoors Basel, Joao Fonseca revealed that he had an agreement in place with his team for winning the event.

“We made the promise that if we win one of these tournaments, we’re gonna shave my head. Soon I’m not gonna have hair,“ the 19-year-old said during the trophy ceremony following his victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

On Friday, it came out that the Brazilian made good on his promise. Photos of a curly-less Fonseca emerged, as he gets ready to participate in the inaugural Miami Invitational.

His opponent come Monday evening? Carlos Alcaraz, who fittingly turned heads at the US Open when he stepped out with a buzz cut and then changed styles up again with a platinum blond look following his sixth major triumph in New York.

But perhaps no trim job was as notable as the one Mark Lajal revealed a day earlier. After 14 years, the Estonian chopped off the blond dreadlocks he rocked from the time he was eight.

“Now it’s time to turn a page in the book, a new chapter. What will it bring? Don’t know yet, I guess we’ll find out,“ he wrote.

Lajal secured his first finish inside the Top 150 after beginning the 2025 season ranked No. 229.
