Fresh off a run to the final of the ATP 500 event in Tokyo, Taylor Fritz made a winning start to his campaign at the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai on Friday night, battling back from a first set blow-out to defeat Hungary's Fabian Marozsan, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1).

He served to stay in the match twice in the second set, at 4-5 and 5-6, and was down an early mini-break at 2-0 in the second set tie-break.

And it was a milestone win—his 50th of the year.

Having also reached that milestone in 2023 (54 wins) and 2024 (53 wins), Fritz has now become the first American man in 20 years to record 50 or more wins in three consecutive seasons.

The last American man to achieve the feat was former No. 1 Andy Roddick, who actually did it for four years in a row, in 2002 (56 wins), 2003 (72 wins), 2004 (74 wins) and 2005 (59 wins).

In terms of this year, Fritz is just the second man to hit the 50-win milestone, after Carlos Alcaraz (who has 67 wins) and the fourth player overall, male or female, with Iga Swiatek (59 wins) and Aryna Sabalenka (56 wins) having also reached that number.

Those same four players are also the only four players to win 50 or more matches in each of the last three years.

PLAYERS WITH 50+ WINS IN 2023, 2024 AND 2025 (tour-level):

  • Carlos Alcaraz [65 in 2023, 54 in 2024, 67 in 2025]
  • Iga Swiatek [68 in 2023, 64 in 2024, 59 in 2025]
  • Aryna Sabalenka [55 in 2023, 56 in 2024, 56 in 2025]
  • Taylor Fritz [54 in 2023, 53 in 2024, 50 in 2025]

Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Coco Gauff can join the above list if they get to 50 this year, as they’re the only other players who did it in both 2023 and 2024. Zverev is the closest, with 47 going into Shanghai.

Awaiting the No. 5-seeded Fritz in the third round will be No. 32-seeded Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, a 6-3, 7-6 (4) winner over Italy's Luca Nardi.

Fritz and Mpetshi Perricard have played once before and it was a close one, with Fritz battling back from two sets down to prevail in the first round of Wimbledon this year, 6-7 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

There were only two breaks of serve in that entire match, with Fritz getting them both—one in the third set and one in the fifth— and the two hit 66 total aces, 37 for the Frenchman and 29 for the American.

The two will lock horns for the second time in Shanghai on Sunday.
