Taylor Fritz has now reached the quarterfinals or better at all nine Masters 1000 events

Taylor Fritz has reached the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open for the first time after battling past Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round of the Masters 1000 event, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5).

With that, Fritz has now reached the quarterfinals or better at all nine Masters 1000 events in his career. Canada was the only one the No. 4-ranked American had been missing, having been stopped in the round of 16 twice previously, in 2022 and 2023.

Fritz is actually the first American to reach the quarterfinals or better at all nine Masters 1000 events in his career.

Some of the all-time U.S. greats came close—Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick were only missing Monte Carlo, while Jim Courier was only missing Hamburg (now Madrid).

Fritz is the first one to complete the quarterfinal set.

Seven of the nine Masters 1000 events have remained at the same locations since the beginning—Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome, Canada, Cincinnati and Paris.

Two of the current nine weren't always held where they are now: the clay-court event in Madrid in the spring used to be held in Hamburg; and the hard-court event in Shanghai in the fall spent time in Stockholm, Essen, Stuttgart and Madrid (on hard).

There was almost nothing between Fritz and Lehecka on Sunday night, with zero—yes, zero—breaks of serve in the match, both players holding all 18 of their service games. They both faced break points, though, Fritz saving nine and Lehecka five.

In the end it all came down to the tie-breaks, and while the player who took the early lead ended up closing out the first two, Fritz's fighting spirit shone through in the third set breaker, as he rattled off five of the last six points of the match from 4-2 down to clinch an epic victory after two hours and 56 minutes on court.

During his on-court interview as 1 a.m. approached, Fritz was informed he had completed his career quarterfinal set.

"Yeah, that's a pretty cool one," he replied. "They told me after my last match that that's what I was playing for, so yeah, it's awesome, I've had good results everywhere.

"Now I guess the next step is let's try for semis at all of them."

Standing between Fritz and the semis in Toronto will be Andrey Rublev, and it'll be their 10th career meeting, with Fritz holding a 5-4 edge in their first nine (and a 5-2 lead on hard courts).
