On Friday, world No. 8 Dominic Thiem will take on Chilean Nicolas Jarry in the quarterfinals of the German Tennis Championships in Hamburg.

Thiem is coming off of a disappointing trip to Wimbledon, where he was forced to retire after losing the first two sets against Marco Baghdatis in their opening-round match.

Thiem now gets to return to clay, where a good argument can be made that he is the second-best player in the world. He has already cruised through two matches in Hamburg, beating both Corentin Moutet and John Millman in straight sets. If Thiem is fully healthy, then this is a tournament he should win. He is facing an interesting challenge on Friday, though.

Jarry might not be incredibly well known, but the 22-year-old is talented and Thiem must treat this match seriously.

The Chilean beat Peter Gojowczyk 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of this tournament, and he got a walkover in the second because Richard Gasquet withdrew from the event. And while he has never beaten a Top 10 player in his career, he does have three wins over Top 20 players. Thiem is clearly a level above that, but it shows that Jarry is capable of beating the world's best when he is on his game.

Jarry also is a player that prefers to play on clay, so this match happens to be where he is most comfortable as well.
