Tennis Channel MOTD: Nicolas Jarry vs. Nikoloz Basilashvili, Hamburg

On Friday, Nicolas Jarry upset world No. 8 Dominic Thiem 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7) to advance to the semifinals of the German Tennis Championships in Hamburg. The Chilean will face Nikoloz Basilashvili, who beat world No. 13 Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Jarry's win was especially impressive, as Thiem was 27-6 on clay courts in 2018 heading into their match. The Chilean was not going to back down, though. He took it right to Thiem, playing aggressively throughout the entirety of the match. He also showed off his mental toughness, fighting off three set points in the second-set tiebreaker.

Defeating a player of Thiem's caliber should have Jarry feeling extremely confident as he gets set to take on Basilashvili, but the Georgian should also be feeling good about his game as well.

Basilashvili also had to face a tough clay-court player, and he was able to get the job done in what was a relatively straightforward match. The 26-year-old did relent a one-break lead in the second set against the Spaniard, but he was able to end the match with yet another break for 6-4.

Jarry and Basilashvili have met once before on clay—in the Savannah Challenger back in 2016, when Jarry escaped with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win. It'll be interesting to see whether or not that gives the 22-year-old a mental edge in the semifinal. Either way, this should be an exciting match between two players that are very much in-form.
