When Marco Trungelliti lost his third qualifying match for the French Open against Hubert Hurkacz, he thought he had seen the last of Paris in 2018. But then Nick Kyrgios pulled out with an elbow injury, leaving an empty spot for the Argentinian to occupy as one of eight lucky losers.

For his first round match, the world No. 190 had a challenging fight against Australian Bernard Tomic, but managed to win, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

While Trungelliti has been to the second round in Paris twice before, this is the first time he has made it this far after losing in the qualifiers. His story, particularly his choice to drive back to Paris with his 89-year-old grandma instead of take a plane or train, has captivated the world.

If the 28-year-old can win his next match against Marco Cecchinato, it will be the farthest he has gone in a Grand Slam, ever.
