New year, same Sabalenka.

New year, same Sabalenka.

🎾 A Numbers Game

It took world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka just one week to remind everyone that it’s going to take one hell of an effort to unseat her from the top. The 27-year-old, four-time Grand Slam champion romped through the Brisbane draw, with no player pushing her past 6-4 in any set.

Sabalenka wasn’t the only highly ranked player in action on week one—all of the WTA's Top 24 competed in a tournament. Compare that to the ATP side, where four of the tour’s Top 8 opted to skip opening week.

Brad Gilbert, alongside two women making their in-studio debuts on The Big T, Coco Vandeweghe and Danielle Collins, made a salient point on why that is: “Most of the top women are much more active to start the year because you guys have 500 [level] tournaments.”

In January, Brisbane and Adelaide are WTA 500 tournaments, but the simultaneous ATP events are at the 250 level. Move ahead to February, and you'll note that Doha and Dubai are 1000 level for the women, and 500 for the men.

It’s one of tennis’ many, many quirks, but it undoubtedly gives the WTA more time to shine sooner. Good on Aryna for taking advantage.

Despite Poland's United Cup win, world No. 2 Iga Swiatek showed noticeable struggle.

Despite Poland's United Cup win, world No. 2 Iga Swiatek showed noticeable struggle.

📉 Swiatek’s Stock

Would you rather go into a Grand Slam tournament having not played a match in over two months—like Carlos Alcaraz—or having taken two losses in one week? Iga Swiatek may have wished she skipped United Cup, losing to Coco Gauff in straight sets, then falling to Belinda Bencic in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

🏆 Alcaraz and Swiatek are vying to complete Career Grand Slams in Melbourne

The multi-tie, dual-gender event is supposed to mix competition with camaraderie, but it didn't look like Iga was having too much fun.

“Coming into January, you’re supposed to be refreshed… And you’re already mentally frazzled.” Vandeweghe said of Swiatek, who was in tears twice at United Cup. “This is worrisome.”

1️⃣ One-Point Slam Pointer

How would you coach a recreational player who has a chance to win $1 million—if he or she wins one point against a pro?

That very scenario played out Tuesday night in Melbourne, at the Australian Open's 1 Point Slam.

“I think if you have a big serve,” advised Gilbert, “go for big serve on first and second.”

Vandeweghe noted that the prospect of losing a point—and in this format, the “match”—could tighten up the pros more than you'd think.

Lo and behold, Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner and Frances Tiafoe all failed to put their one and only serves in the box at the must-see event.  (SPOILER ALERT: Check out what happened with our photo and video rundown.)

🤔 Game Time!

This week’s podcast debuted something new: High-Percentage Tennis. The concept was simple: As Gilbert, Vandeweghe and Collins asked one another, What percentage chance do you give the following of happening:

  • A men’s player besides Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner wins a major in 2025
  • Coco Gauff becomes No. 1 in the world at some point in her career
  • Juan Carlos Ferrero will coach a Top 100 player this season

Spirited debate ensued—particularly when after Gilbert’s suggestion of Ferrero coaching on the WTA tour.

“Will Juan Carlos coach a woman? No chance, there’s zero chance,” said Vandeweghe.

Not so fast, said Collins.

I’m gonna call him right now, let’s see if he wants to work with Danielle Collins. You think he can handle me?

And let’s not forget this question: What percentage do we think Serena Williams will play a tour-level match this year?

Find out the answers on the pod.
