The Pick, presented by DraftKings Sportsbook: Jannik Sinner vs. Novak Djokovic, Wimbledon

After a 6-1, 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-3 victory over world No. 7 Carlos Alcaraz, world No. 13 Jannik Sinner will now face world No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Djokovic is a giant -900 favorite to emerge as the winner in this match-up at the All England Club, and he’s also an overwhelming favorite to go on to win this tournament. With that in mind, it really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody if Djokovic takes care of business against Sinner.

However, the Italian just might be able to put up something of a fight in this spot, and that's what we're focusing on.

All things considered, Sinner’s win over Alcaraz was truly a monumental achievement for the 20-year-old. While everybody on the planet is quick to praise the Spaniard for being one of the game’s best young players, Sinner is a little slept on in that regard. The Italian is just barely removed from being a teenager himself, yet he has been a Top 10 player before and just might be one again by the end of the year. Sinner is also on one heck of a run in London right now, as he has already earned wins over Stan Wawrinka, John Isner and Alcaraz. The win over Isner was particularly impressive, as the American had just eliminated Andy Murray in his previous match. Sinner took care of Isner in straight sets, impressive considering how well the grass suits big servers.

There’s no denying that going up against a complete player like Djokovic is a different beast than any of those other competitors, but Sinner has a pretty complete game himself. While he’s definitely a bit lanky and awkward looking, the Italian moves extremely well for a guy his size. He also has great power on his serve and his ground strokes, while also possessing a great mind for the game—and a fiery spirit on the court.

For as good as Djokovic is, he did drop a set in each of his wins over Soonwoo Kwon and Tim van Rijthoven in this tournament. Neither one of those players should have been able to get on the board against a player of Djokovic’s caliber, but the Serbian does tend to lose focus at times in best-of-five. And if he does that against Sinner, the Italian will make him pay rather quickly.

All in all, Sinner might not be talented enough to beat Djokovic, arguably the best player in the history of the sport. But the 20-year-old does have enough ability to win at least one set in this one, and he could turn some heads with his ability to match the Serbian’s shot-making prowess. The fact that Sinner isn’t being given much of a chance in this one should actually loosen him up a bit, and that will allow him to play a little more freely. In the long run, that’ll help him make a dent on the scoreboard. Those are just some of the reasons why we’re backing him to win a set in this match.
